AFOC Open Sports Festival opens in Abu Dhabi
Fireworks light up the night sky during the inauguration of the 13th AFOC Open Sports Festival in Abu Dhabi...

The 13th Open Sports Festival of the Armed Forces Officers Club (AFOC), opened in Abu Dhabi late on Sunday evening. Minister of Public Works, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, inaugurated the annual Ramadan sports event following a spectacular opening ceremony, which was held in two segments - indoor and outdoor.

The colourful and sensational opening ceremony attracted a number of sheikhs, ministers, members of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, other senior officials, members of the diplomatic corps, heads of the various sports associations in the country and other dignitaries.

The indoor ceremony, which lasted around 40 minutes, was held in the AFOC auditorium and showcased a blend of heritage and modernity in the UAE.

The success of the event was due to the planning of the Higher Organising Committee, led by Lt. General (Rtd) Mohammed Hilal Surour Al-Ka'abi, who is also AFOC Board Chairman, and the various sub-committees.

The ceremony also highlighted the role of Her Highness Shaikha Fatima bint Mubarak (the Mother of the Nation) in empowering women and supporting them since 1973 through the establishment of the Abu Dhabi Women's Organisation and the UAE General Women's Union.

More than 3000 contestants, representing 55 nationalities, from within the UAE and abroad are participating in the annual sports festival which will last until September 13.

The guest of honour, Shaikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, torched the Olympic flame to formally declare the games open amidst big applause. This was followed by spectacular fireworks which illuminated the sky of Abu Dhabi in beautiful colours to signal the commencement of the annual sports festival.

New Porsche 911 hits UAE
Porsche has launched its new 911 range in the UAE.

More powerful flat-six engines, with direct fuel injection, are among the highlights of the new series for the rear-wheel and all-wheel drive variants. Power is upped to 345bhp on the Carrera and Carrera 4 models, while the S variants now develop 385bhp. The new PDK dual clutch will also be available as an option in the new series.

The new models are now available at Porsche dealership in Dubai.

A380 the future is ready for boarding – The 1st Delivery to Emirates Airline

Emirates Airline has taken delivery of its first Airbus A380 aircraft in an historic delivery ceremony with over 500 guests in Hamburg, Germany. The first customer A380 powered by Engine Alliance engines, was presented to Chairman and Chief Executive Emirates Airline and Group, Sheik Ahmed Bin Saeed Al-Maktoum and to Emirates President, Tim Clark by Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO and John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. Also present was James Moravecek, Engine Alliance President and Bruce Hughes, former Engine Alliance President.

“ Emirates was quick to recognize the potential of Airbus’ all new A380 design, with its large double-deck capacity and excellent operating economics. It will be one of the pillars of Emirates’ future,” said Sheik Ahmed. “With its very low fuel burn and quietness, the A380 also sets new standards in environmental performance. It will definitely help air transportation and Emirates grow, while reducing the impact on the environment,” he added.

At the ceremony, Emirates unveiled its exclusive, spacious and luxurious cabin, featuring 489 seats (14 first class suites, 76 business and 399 economy). For added passenger relaxation, innovative ceiling mood lighting throughout creates a calming starry night sky effect.

 “ Fulfilling the A380 dream has required vision, innovation, a lot of courage and determination. Emirates shared in this vision early on and today the result is the world’s most modern, innovative and eco-efficient aircraft ever built. The A380 is changing the way people travel. Airbus is proud of all the engineers, staff and customers such as Emirates who have made the A380 a magnificent reality,” said Tom Enders.

$1bn 'Property House' launched in Dubai

A new Dubai-based real estate firm, Property House, was launched in Dubai, with plans to invest $1bn in residential and commercial projects over the next year. The company, which has affiliates in Pakistan and Turkey, has already bought land in Dubai and invested in a $4bn mixed-use development in the northern emirate of Ajman in partnership with South Korean property developer Dseco.

Aluminum smelter treats employees and their families to a fun-filled event

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Employees of Dubai Aluminum Company Limited (“DUBAL”), together with their spouses and children, gathered at the company’s smelter complex at Jebel Ali on Friday 16 November 2007 for the biennial DUBAL Family Day. Held within the Residential Area of DUBAL’s 480-hectare site, the event drew more than 8,000 people across the age spectrum, all of whom were delighted by the range of entertainment and refreshments on offer.

There was something for everyone to enjoy – from jumping castles to face painters, traditional singers to hot air balloon rides, and children’s fun rides to a fireworks display. Catering for every interest while captivating the imagination, a variety of artistes performed – including jugglers, balloon twisters, acrobats, a magician/illusionist, and Indian and Tanoura dancers. Lots of food and drink was also available, ranging from cold drinks and snacks to a buffet dinner.

The atmosphere was a-buzz with excitement throughout the day, as colleagues and friends intermingled and made the most of a relaxing day among family.
